Midland Highway safety improvements

We’re improving safety on the Midland Highway in Nalinga thanks to the Australian Government and Victorian Government joint investment in the Road Safety Program.

What we’re doing

We’re making the Midland Highway in Nalinga safer by:

  • Installing flexible safety barriers in the centre and the side of the road to reduce the risk of run-off-road and head-on collisions.
  • Improving the surface of the road and widening road shoulders.
  • Widening and installing dedicated turning lanes at intersections.

Traffic impacts

You’ll see our crews on site from early October 2024 and we expect works to be complete by mid-2025, weather permitting.

For everyone’s safety, speed limits will be reduced through the worksite and a lane closure will be required at times. Traffic controllers will be onsite to guide road users safely through the site.

Please be aware of changed traffic conditions and allow extra time for travel.

Vegetation Removal

We have designed this project to minimise vegetation removal, however as part of these works 13 large trees will need to be removed from the roadside, including two at the intersection of Dookie-Violet Town Road and the Midland Highway.

We are working with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to identify opportunities to reuse the timber from these trees in local waterways, providing shelter, food and breeding locations for native fish and other animals.

Background

Road safety improvements including the installation of flexible safety barriers have been progressing on the Midland Highway between Shepparton and Benalla since 2019.

These works are designed to reduce road trauma and save lives.

By installing flexible safety barriers along this section of the Midland Highway, we can improve road safety, prevent serious crashes or reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.
