Midland Highway and Clyde Road roundabout

The Australian and Victorian governments are upgrading the Midland Highway and Clyde Road intersection at Bannockburn to make your journey safer.

Project status:

Underway

Update – October 2024

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on a range of factors, including favourable weather and site conditions.

Roadworks

Construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Midland Highway and Clyde Road is underway. Works started on 20 May 2024 and will take up to 10 months to complete, weather permitting.

Major works include:

  • earthworks
  • pavement construction and asphalting
  • drainage
  • kerb and channel construction
  • construction of traffic islands
  • guard rail installation
  • upgraded street lighting to improve night-time line of sight for road users
  • topsoiling, line-marking and sign installation

Disruptions

There are significant changes in traffic conditions in the area during this project.

Crews are on site from Monday to Friday, between 7am and 5pm, with the possibility of some weekend and night work.

Traffic management includes reduced speed limits and lane closures to protect the safety of crews and road users. Road users are encouraged to plan their journey to minimise disruptions.

We will update this website with disruption information as the project progresses.

Benefits

The Midland Highway is a key connection route from Ballarat to Geelong and the intersection upgrade will make the intersection safer for the thousands of motorists who travel this highway every day. Golden Plains is a growing shire, and these upgrades will deliver a safer entrance to the Bannockburn township.

Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersections because they slow the flow of traffic and guide vehicles in one direction, reducing the risk and severity of crashes.

With the increasing number of road users, the new roundabout will:

  • Improve safety for all road users, including truck drivers
  • Reduce crashes and the severity of fatal and serious crashes
  • Future-proof the intersections to allow for increased traffic
  • Improve access to side streets

Design

The final intersection design incorporates feedback received during initial community and stakeholder engagement on the project.

The public lighting plan will ensure the intersection is visible, improving safety for all road users, while also respecting the Bannockburn night sky for nearby residents.

Background

Research shows that roundabouts can reduce fatal and serious injury crashes at intersections by up to 85 per cent.

The community told us they found it difficult to choose a gap in the traffic at this location because of the intersection layout and traffic travelling at high speed along the Midland Highway.

The Midland Highway between Geelong and Ballarat is a key commuter and freight route, used by approximately 6,500 vehicles per day. Clyde Rd carries 1,950 vehicles per day, between Bannockburn and the Midland Highway.

Golden Plains Shire is in the top three fastest growing regional Local Government Areas in Victoria. It’s predicted that Bannockburn’s population will grow to at least 7,000 by 2031.

Project funding

This $6.5 million project is jointly funded by the Australian Government ($5.2 million) and Victorian Government ($1.3 million). This project has also received funding from the Traffic Accident Commission (TAC).
