Complete
Update - June 2025
Works complete
Construction of the two-lane roundabout on the Midland Highway–Central Avenue roundabout is now complete.
Temporary lighting is currently in place until the permanent lighting can be activated. During this time a temporary speed reduction will remain in place for the safety or all road users.
The new roundabout provides improved safety for all road users travelling between Shepparton, Benalla and Wangaratta.
Thank you for your patience while works were underway.

Project Overview
Roundabouts are one of the safest types of intersections because they slow traffic to safe speeds and direct traffic flow in the one direction.
With increasing volumes of traffic on the Midland Highway, this roundabout will improve safety at the intersection for all road users by:
- improving traffic flow
- providing safer turning opportunities
- encouraging drivers to slow down
- improving the visibility of the intersection and installing new lighting
Background
Shepparton is a major regional transport hub with increasing numbers of heavy vehicles travelling through the area to service growing regional and metropolitan populations. On average, 4,500 vehicles use the Midland Highway each day, approximately 15% of which are heavy vehicles.
At the intersection of Central Avenue and Midland Highway, the proximity of local industrial areas is increasing the number of heavy vehicles using this intersection to access the Midland Highway or the Shepparton Alternative Route.
In the five-year period between July 2015 to June 2020, there were four crashes at this intersection resulting in serious injuries.
The upgrade of this intersection will provide a safer connection for road users travelling between Shepparton, Benalla and Wangaratta.
