Melrose Drive/Hume Freeway overpass, West Wodonga
We’re making the Melrose Drive Hume Freeway overpass at Wodonga safer with the installation of public safety barriers.
Underway
This important safety upgrade is funded by the Victorian Governments and will be delivered by the Department of Transport and Planning.
The project focuses on improving safety for pedestrian using the footpath on the western side of the overpass through the installation of public safety barriers.
Safety barriers will also be installed on the eastern side of the overpass.
Traffic impacts
You’ll see our crews on site from 15 July 2024 undertaking site preparation and installation of the public safety barriers.
The works are expected to take approximately 3 months to complete, weather permitting.
The installation of the public safety barriers requires works on the surface and underneath the Melrose Drive overpass.
To deliver the works as safety and efficiently as possible, lane closures and reduced speeds will be required at times on both the Melrose Drive overpass and the Hume Freeway. These impacts will vary depending on the stage of works. Delays of up to five minutes should be expected.
In the later stages of the works, large machinery will be positioned beneath the overpass on the Hume Freeway to complete the barrier installation.
To move the machinery safely, there will be brief, full closures of traffic lanes on the Hume Freeway. Only one direction of traffic will be impacted at a time. Traffic will be stopped for five to ten minutes under the direction of on-site traffic controllers. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption where possible.
Please observe changed traffic conditions and follow the direction of on-site traffic controllers. Allow extra time when travelling through the area.
Pedestrian access
Access to the pedestrian footpath on the Melrose Drive overpass will be maintained throughout the works where possible. However, there will be times when the footpath needs to be closed for the safe operation of machinery.
Please take note of on-site signs indicating when the footpath is closed.
