Maribyrnong Road tram track maintenance works and road closure


The tram tracks on Maribyrnong Road, between Union Road and Navigator Street, have reached the end of their life cycle. To continue to deliver a safe and reliable tram service to the area, these tram tracks must be replaced.

Maribyrnong Road, between Union Road and Navigator Street, will have disruptions from Sunday 26 May, including a full road closure from Friday 28 June.

Early works

From 9pm to 5am, Sunday 26 May to Friday 21 June 2024, (Sunday to Thursday nights only)

What’s happening

Locating underground utility services and installing overhead poles.

What to expect

  • Nightly road and intersection closures.
  • Mostly medium levels of noise during the night.
  • Vehicles, trucks, machinery and contractors on site.

Major works

From 9pm, Friday 28 June to 5am, Monday 15 July 2024 (24-hour works)

What’s happening

Excavating the old track and installing new tracks and road surfaces.

What to expect

  • Full kerb to kerb road closure and of Maribyrnong Road between Union Road and Navigator Street including the Raleigh Road Bridge crossing the Maribyrnong River.
  • The intersection of Epsom Road and Scotia Street and Maribyrnong Road will reopen to north-south traffic at 5am, Tuesday 2 July 2024.
  • Some side streets will be closed for storage of materials.
  • No access to private driveways in the work area. Please move your cars and park in side streets during the works.
  • Access for emergency services will be provided as required.
  • Extremely high levels of noise.
  • Detours for bike riders, pedestrians and
  • Service changes to tram routes 57 and 82

Getting around by road

Traffic management and signage will direct traffic. Please follow signage around works.

Recommended detour routes 

For journeys to/from the area east of the Maribyrnong River, two alternatives are recommended:

  • From the north: via the M80 Ring Road, M79 Calder Fwy and Bulla Road
  • From the south: via Ballarat Road, Smithfield Road and Ascot Vale Road

Two alternative connections to Highpoint Shopping Centre are: 

  • North: via Buckley Street, Milleara Road, Military Road, Canning Street, Cordite Avenue
  • South: via Langs Road, Fisher Parade, Farnsworth Avenue, Ballarat Road, Rosamond Road

By public transport

  • There will be service changes to tram routes 57 and 82.
  • Bus route 468 will be impacted.

There may be temporary footpath closures around the works with local detours in place.

Look out for the pedestrian crossing signage along the work site to cross the road safely.
