Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street intersection upgrade

Newtown, Geelong

Project status:

Underway

Update - April 2024

We’re extending the right-turn lane on Latrobe Terrace (Melbourne bound side) to improve safety and capacity at the intersection, particularly for vehicles turning eastbound onto Fyans Street.

Crews will be working at the intersection from mid-April. Works are expected to take four weeks to complete (weather permitting).

Traffic impacts

Two Melbourne bound traffic lanes will remain available for through-traffic travelling along Latobe Terrace, with a reduced speed limit of 40km/h and traffic controllers on site to assist.

Construction will be completed Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

Parking restrictions will be in place on the Melbourne bound of Latrobe Terrace between Anne Street and Marshall Street.

Please take care when travelling through the work site for your own safety, the safety of our road crews and the safety of others on the road. Look out for signs indicating changed traffic conditions and allow extra time for your journey.

Overview

This intersection safety upgrade is funded by the Australian Government as part of the Black Spot Program.

Latrobe Terrace has three lanes in each direction carrying about 37,000 vehicles every day, while Fyans Street has up to 17,000 vehicles each day. Linking to semi-industrial areas and surrounded by major businesses, high volumes of freight vehicles use the intersection daily.

Improvements to the intersection will include:

  • Latrobe Terrace right-turn lane lengthened on the Melbourne bound side (to support eastbound vehicles turning onto Fyans Street)
  • Fully controlled right-turn arrows at the intersection
  • Additional signs and line marking.

In the five-year period ending December 2022 there were 16 crashes, six of these resulting in serious injuries.

Benefits

This project focuses on the intersection of Latrobe Terrace and Fyans Street in Newtown.

Benefits include:

  • a safer intersection for all road users
  • improved traffic flow and safety for vehicles turning right from Latrobe Terrace into Fyans Street
  • additional signs and line marking.
