There will be 24-hour road closures on La Trobe Street between Harbour Esplanade and Queen Street from 10.30pm Friday 12 July to 4am Saturday 27 July for Stage 1 of the construction of the new level-access tram stops.

Some bike lanes will be closed during the works.

As part of works taking place for the West Gate Tunnel Project, the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail is currently continuously closed between Dynon Road and Footscray Road until 5am Wednesday 24 July. Local business

The businesses located around the works will remain open. Please continue to support local businesses during these essential works. Pedestrian access to these businesses will remain open throughout the works.

Parking changes

There will be some changes to parking on La Trobe Street following the completion of this important upgrade. The main changes will be between Spencer and King streets, and Russell and Exhibition streets.

The City of Melbourne’s Parking and Kerbside Management Plan aims to make parking simpler and more reliable.

The plan commits to reviewing the neighbourhood parking changes made each year to confirm parking is working well. These reviews consider community feedback and parking data to determine if adjustments are needed.

About the project

In July and August we will be delivering 12 level-access tram stops at six locations along La Trobe Street, at Docklands Stadium (Stop D1), Spencer Street (Stop 1), William Street (Stop 3), Elizabeth Street (Stop 5), Swanston Street (Stop 6) and Exhibition Street (Stop 8). This project will be delivered in two stages and will improve accessibility, passenger safety and service reliability on the transport network.

The upgraded tram stops will include raised platforms to provide level boarding with low-floor trams, new shelters, seating, improved lighting and passenger information displays.

The bike lanes along La Trobe Street will also be improved for the safety of all road users, with more consistent bicycle lane widths and physical kerb separators. This will improve protection for bike riders at key intersections, including King, William, Queen, Elizabeth, Russell and Exhibition streets.

The pedestrian crossings connected to the tram stops will also be widened to provide better accessibility and support increased patronage.
