About the project
Mount Alexander Road is part of a Strategic Cycling Corridor and one of the City of Moonee Valley’s busiest bike routes. It links to stations, schools, local activity centres, green spaces, the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail and Melbourne’s CBD.
That’s why we’re trialling an innovative new bike rider awareness system on Mount Alexander Road between Wellington and Mooltan streets.
The system will include LED bike warning signs, stud lights for ground illumination and bike detectors to improve safety and connectivity for all road users.
When
Works will take place from Monday, 8 April 2024 for up to 20 weeks on Mount Alexander Road between Wellington and Mooltan streets, Travancore.
We’ll undertake the works in stages to minimise disruptions to traffic and the local community.
Works near residential properties will take place during the day. Works in front of businesses will take place at night.
Day works will take place between 9am and 5pm.
Night works will take place between 8pm and 5am.
The works will involve:
- Setting up the work area, including traffic management
- Installing bike warning signs on Mount Alexander Road
- Installing bike detectors to detect inbound bike riders on Mount Alexander Road
- Installing LED stud lights along the bike lane at six intersections on Mount Alexander Road
- Installing green surface treatment to raise awareness of people on bikes
- Installing sharrows or bike symbols at six intersections within the inbound bike lane on Mount Alexander Road.
Improving active transport
No matter where we live, it’s important for everyone in our community to access and enjoy our streets. That means joining up the missing links in our neighbourhood transport network with more paths, crossings, and safe bike lanes.
Improving walking and bike riding connections that enable more Victorians to walk or get on their bike for everyday trips supports the climate change pledge of 25% active transport mode share by 2030.
If 50% of short vehicle trips were switched to riding a bike or walking, the Victorian economy would save $165million every year in congestion, health, infrastructure, and environmental costs.
Q&As
Why are you doing these works?
The Australian Government’s Black Spot Program is investing $1.5 million towards improving safety for bike riders on Mount Alexander Road, Travancore.
The Black Spot Program is fully funded by the Australian Government and targets roads where a high number of crashes occur.
Between June 2015 and June 2020 there were 19 crashes involving bike riders on Mount Alexander Road between Wellington and Mooltan streets, including one fatal crash.
We’re trialling an innovative new bike rider awareness system on Mount Alexander Road between Wellington and Mooltan streets, Travancore.
The system will include LED bike warning signs, LED stud lights for ground illumination and bike detectors to improve safety and connectivity for all road users.
Will there be changes to parking?
No. There will be no changes to parking as a result of this project.
What impacts will there be to the community during construction?
Noise levels will be mostly low to medium. There will be trucks, people and specialised equipment working near the site.
We will minimise disruption to the local area as much as possible; however, some vehicle noise and lights are unavoidable due to safety requirements for our workers and the local community.
Local detours will be in place, with signage and traffic management on site to help direct road users.
Access to properties and businesses will be maintained at all times throughout the works.
Once works are complete, a thorough clean-up of the site will take place.
As our works are weather dependent, work dates and times are subject to change.
