Heidelberg-Kinglake Road motorcycle safety improvements

Project update - August 2023

We’re carrying out repair works on some driveway entrances and road shoulders on Heidelberg-Kinglake Road between Dinsdale Road in St Andrews and Old Kinglake Road in Kinglake.

Crews will work on site from Monday 21 August to Friday 25 August 2023. Works will take place during the day between 9.30am and 3.30pm to minimise disruptions to drivers during peak hours.

During these works you can expect:

• Reduced speeds in the works area to keep drivers and crews safe
• Single lane closures between Dinsdale Road and Old Kinglake Road
• Minor levels of dust and noise around the work areas
• Minor travel delays during works
• Traffic controllers will be on site to help you move through the work area safely
• Access to some driveways will be restricted – we’ll contact you if we need to carry out repair works on your driveway entrance.

Thanks for your patience while we make these improvements on Heidelberg-Kinglake Road.

What we've done

Heidelberg-Kinglake Road between Buttermans Track and Mt Jerusalem Track is a popular riding route for motorcycle riders and cyclists.

To make the road safer for motorcycle riders we:

• upgraded existing roadside barriers with new safety barriers and rub rails in high-risk locations to reduce the risk of run-off-road collisions
• resurfaced and sealed gravel sections of the road in high-risk locations
• sealed shoulders and some driveway surfaces to help motorcycle riders and other road users stay in control if they veer off the road
• removed hazards from the roadside, including a redundant bus stop and old telecommunication poles
• improved line marking and drainage.

These upgrades will also improve safety for other vulnerable road user groups including cyclists.

This project is funded by the Motorcycle Safety Levy and is being delivered by the Department of Transport, so all road users including motorcycle riders, can get home safely.

Motorcycle safety Levy

Funds for the Motorcycle Safety Levy (MSL) are collected as part of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) premium in registrations for motorcycles with engine capacity of 126cc or above.

This levy contributes to projects that improve the safety of motorcycle riders to help prevent crashes or reduce the severity when a crash does occur. Infrastructure improvements is the largest area of investment from the levy.

Too many motorcycle riders are dying or being seriously injured on our roads - and it is the responsibility of all of us, both drivers and riders, to change this.
