Grubb Road and Smithton Grove intersection upgrade

We’re improving safety, capacity and traffic flow at the intersection of Grubb Road and Smithton Grove in Ocean Grove.

Project status:

Underway

Update – September 2024

Preconstruction - watermain works

Watermain relocation works are expected to be undertaken from 8 October 2024, along Grubb Road, between Adco Grove and north of Smithton Grove, for approximately six weeks.

We will update this webpage with information about major works when confirmed.

Traffic management

While watermain works are underway, there will be disruptions on Grubb Road, Smithton Grove and surrounding roads. Crews will aim to minimise delays and access impacts as much as possible.

Access to residential properties and businesses will be maintained, with some alternative arrangements in place. Our contractor will contact impacted residents/businesses about temporary changes, if required.

Please note: dates and timeframes of these works are dependent on favourable weather and site conditions.

Traffic management, including a 40km/h speed limit, closures and a short detour will be in place when required to keep drivers and our workers safe.

Disruptions

Grubb Road

Open to traffic. One lane closed, if required (traffic controllers to guide traffic through, one lane at a time).

Smithton Grove

Closure of Smithton Grove entrance, at the Grubb Road intersection. A short detour will be in place.

Grubb Road service road

Closure of entry point on Grubb Road, as required. Access via Adco Grove.

About the upgrade

We're upgrading Grubb Road and Smithton Grove intersection with traffic lights to make turning in and out of the industrial estate safer and more efficient.

Traffic lights will provide a safer and more predictable interaction of vehicles, controlling the movement of traffic in and out of the busy industrial estate. The upgrade will also provide a safer, more predictable environment for pedestrians and cyclists.

To make this intersection safer and more efficient, we'll:

  • install new traffic lights, to better control the movement of vehicles
  • install new dedicated turning lanes to create separation between traffic movements and improve traffic flow on Grubb Road
  • install pedestrian operated crossings on Grubb Road and Smithton Grove
  • install a new traffic island and line-markings
  • upgrade street lighting to improve visibility for all road users at the intersection
  • install new bus stops and bays on both sides of Grubb Road
  • install a new footpath for pedestrians to easily access the new bus bays.

The improvements have also been designed to complement future growth and development along Grubb Road, including increased traffic volumes and allowing for future pedestrian and cyclist connections.

Background

Grubb Road is the key entry and exit route for Ocean Grove locals, providing an important connection with Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula for residents, businesses, workers and visitors to the region.

In late 2018 community members participated in a workshop to provide feedback about the current and future needs of Grubb Road between Bellarine Highway and The Parade, Ocean Grove.

As a result of the planning project, the Australian Government invested funding to upgrade access in and out of the Grubb Road industrial estate.
Priorities identified as part of the planning project will also help inform future funding opportunities.

Environment

We share the value the Bellarine community places on the environment. Our project team will aim to retain as much vegetation as possible.
