Goulburn Valley Highway - Safety Barrier from Seymour to Shepparton
We’re improving road safety on the Goulburn Valley Highway between Seymour and Kialla.
Update - December 2023
We’re improving safety on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Nagambie with the installation of flexible safety barrier.
To progress the barrier installation, we first have to complete earthworks and drainage improvements on sections of the Goulburn Valley Freeway between Racecourse Road and Grimwade Road at Nagambie (the Nagambie Bypass).
These works are part of a project to install 190 kilometres of flexible safety barriers on the Goulburn Valley corridor between the Hume Freeway and Ross Road, south of Kialla. The works will improve safety and reduce the risk of run-off-road and head-on crashes.
Approximately 180kms of flexible safety barrier has successfully been installed on the Goulburn Valley Freeway since works began in May 2022, making this key regional corridor safer for all road users.
The works at Nagambie will complete the Goulburn Valley Highway project.
Traffic impacts
During earthworks, drainage improvements and barrier installation on the Goulburn Valley Highway at Nagambie, lane closures will be in place and speeds will be reduced.
A section of the slow lane on both sides of the Nagambie Bypass carriageway, between Racecourse Road and Grimwade Road, will be closed with temporary barriers in place for the protection of motorists and our road crews.
The lane closures will be in place permanently during the works, with speeds reduced as needed during works and after hours.
Works are expected to begin in December and be completed mid-2024.
Thank you for your patience while we complete these important safety works.
Background
The Goulburn Valley Highway in Victoria, connecting with the Newell Highway in NSW and the Leichhardt and Gore Highways in QLD, forms a national corridor serving major freight links between Melbourne and Brisbane.
Duplication of the Goulburn Valley Highway from Shepparton to Seymour started in 2000 with the highway now duplicated from the Hume Freeway to north of Arcadia.

Road safety infrastructure plays a vital role in preventing serious crashes. It also helps to reduce the severity of crashes when they’re unavoidable.
When a vehicle hits a flexible safety barrier, the posts bend at the base and the ropes catch the vehicle like a net. This helps to absorb the impact and shield the vehicle from hitting oncoming traffic, or into roadside hazards such as trees.
These upgrades are being delivered thanks to a joint investment of the Australian Government through the Roads of Strategic Importance program and the Transport Accident Commission.
