Geelong Road, Whitely Parade and Mitford Parade safety upgrades
As part of the Black Spot Program, we are improving safety at Geelong Road, Whitely Parade and Mitford Parade in West Footscray.
Planned
Project update – July 2024
We’ve completed safety improvement works at the Geelong Road and Mitford Parade intersection.
As part of these works, we have:
- Introduced a right turn ban out of Mitford Parade. Drivers on Mitford Road wanting to head westbound towards Brooklyn can turn left onto Geelong Road and make a u-turn at the traffic lights at the Roberts Street/Somerville Road intersection.
- Built a traffic island on Mitford Parade to facilitate left only turn movements.
- Installed a speed hump and a raised pedestrian crossing along the Princes Highway service lane to slow traffic down.
- Updated signage.
- Updated line marking.

Geelong Road and Whitely Parade
The Department of Transport and Planning are working with the Australian Government in relation to the delivery of improvements at Geelong Road and Whitely Parade. We'll keep the community updated on the project and timing of works.
Benefits
These works will:
- improve safety for all road users
- help divert non-local traffic onto arterial roads and discourage them from using the local street network as a thoroughfare route
- help slow traffic down on the service road and improve safety for pedestrians as they travel to and from the bus stop.
Project background
The Australian Government is progressively increasing its annual commitment to the Black Spot Program to $150 million, nationally.
These upgrades on Geelong Road are fully funded by the Australian Government.
Road crashes are a major cost to Australians every year. Black Spot projects target those road locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring. By funding measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes. Programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented.
Geelong Road is a major route through the western suburbs of Melbourne, linking to the Princes Freeway (M1) at its south-western end. Mitford Parade links Geelong Road and Somerville Road and provides access to the abutting light industrial areas.
Mitford Road is the most direct route for traffic from Paramount Road travelling southwest on Geelong Road. This causes Mitford Parade to experience traffic volumes higher than what is appropriate for a local street and increases the exposure to crashes at the intersection with Geelong Road.
