Frankston-Flinders Road, Eramosa Road, and Grant Road pedestrian safety improvements
We've improved pedestrian safety at the intersection of Frankston-Flinders Road, Eramosa Road, and Grant Road in Somerville.
Complete
What we've done
- Upgraded the two existing zebra crossings on Eramosa Road East and Frankston-Flinders Road to raised pedestrian crossings.
- Built a new raised pedestrian crossing with flashing pedestrian lights on Grant Road.
- Replaced the existing flashing lights on Eramosa Road East and Frankston-Flinders Road with new flashing pedestrian lights to improve pedestrian visibility.
- Upgraded the footpath on the west side of Grant Road to include a ramp and handrail to improve accessibility.
- Installed new pedestrian fencing, pavement tactiles, line markings and signs.
- Upgraded street lighting to improve pedestrian visibility.
- Removed one parking space on Frankston-Flinders Road to prevent cars reversing onto the new raised pedestrian crossing zone.
Parking removal
To prevent cars reversing onto the new raised pedestrian crossing zone, we’ve removed one parking space located on Frankston-Flinders Road.
Project benefits
We’ve heard from the community that risky driver behaviour, speeding vehicles and a lack of visibility makes crossing at the intersection difficult for pedestrians, particularly school children and people who use mobility aids.
Between June 2016 and June 2021, there were six crashes reported in the vicinity of the intersection, with one crash involving a pedestrian and two crashes resulting in serious injuries.
Pedestrians are completely exposed to the full force of a crash, making them some of the most vulnerable road users.
These improvements will provide crossing facilities for pedestrians to safely move across the intersection and improve pedestrian safety in the Somerville shopping precinct.
These works will deliver safety improvements for pedestrians by making the intersection easier to cross and making them more visible to drivers.
While the raised pedestrian crossings will remind drivers to slow down on approach, they are not expected to negatively impact traffic flow through the intersection.
