Ryans Road and Wattletree Road intersection upgrade
We’re upgrading the intersection of Ryans Road and Wattletree Road to improve safety and pedestrian access to bus stops and schools.
Project update - September 2024
The new footpath at the intersection of Ryans Road and Wattletree Road is open.
We’ll let the community know before works to install handrails along the new footpath are scheduled. During handrail installation works, there will be temporary closures of the new footpath. Please follow on-site signage and the directions of crews for pedestrian detours.
Remaining works will be completed during the day between 9:30am and 3:30pm; Mondays to Fridays with no works scheduled on public holidays. During day works crews will work on the roadside and lanes will remain open on Ryans Road and Wattletree Road.
There may be times where crews will need to work at night to minimise disruptions to traffic and keep crews safe. During night works, crews will work between 8pm and 5am; Sundays to Thursdays.
During night works, you can expect:
- Lane closures on Ryans Road and Wattletree Road with traffic management controllers directing drivers.
- Low to medium levels of noise. We’ll complete the noisiest works as early in the evening as possible. Crews use modern equipment to reduce noise, however the works will unavoidably emit some noise and light. For the safety of road users and workers on site, reversing beepers are a requirement on all machinery.
- A reduced 40km/h speed limit to keep crews safe.
s stop closure.
Temporary bus stop closure
The northbound bus stop at Ryans Road/Parry Road has been reopened. For more information, please visit the PTV website.

Improvements include; building new footpaths on Ryans Road, building retaining walls along sections of the new footpath, upgrading the northbound bus stop near Ryans Road/Parry Road, installing new signs, installing new fencing at the school crossing on Ryans Road near Parry Road, and trimming and removing trees.
What we’re doing
To improve safety and connectivity at the intersection of Ryans Road and Wattletree Road, we’re:
- Building new footpaths and upgrading the existing pedestrian island on Ryans Road to safely connect pedestrians to nearby public transport facilities and schools.
- Improving the road surface at the existing northbound bus stop near Ryans Road/Parry Road.
- Trimming and removing vegetation on the west side of the intersection to improve sight lines for turning drivers and crossing pedestrians.
- Replacing the ‘Give Way’ sign at the intersection with a ‘Stop’ sign and installing advance warning signs along the bend on Wattletree Road to improve driver safety.
- Upgrading the existing school crossing on Wattletree Road near Parry Road with new handrails and tactiles for better accessibility.
- Building retaining walls along sections of the new footpath to meet accessibility requirements.
Environment
We share the value that the local community places on the environment. To make these important improvements, we need to remove 18 trees at the intersection of Ryans Road and Wattletree Road.
Prior to any vegetation removal, we work with designers to try to retain existing trees and vegetation, while balancing this with the critical need to improve road safety. We’ve worked with Banyule Council and have modified the project design to minimise impacts to significant trees. We’re also contributing funding to replant and protect more native trees in the environment.
Ryans Road and Wallowa Road/Allendale Road intersection upgrade
We’re making upgrades to improve safety at the intersection of Ryans Road and Wallowa Road/Allendale Road intersection.
Improvements include:
- Fully controlled right hand turns on all approaches at the intersection.
- Building a new dedicated left turn slip lane from Ryans Road to Wallowa Road and a new pedestrian crossing controlled by traffic lights.
- Extending the right turn lane on Allendale Rd.
- Minor road widening at the intersection.
- Realigning of some existing footpaths.
- Upgrades to pedestrian crossings where road widening is occurring.
- Upgrading traffic islands.
- Trimming vegetation and removing some trees to improve sight lines for drivers and allow for road widening.
- Upgrading street lighting.

We’re currently finalising the design for these improvements and construction works are expected to begin in mid-2025.
Before construction works begin, we need to complete service relocation works.
We’ll keep the community updated before any construction works at this intersection begin.
Project background
We’ve heard that pedestrian safety and lack of footpath connectivity, unsealed bus stops, lack of advance warning on approach to the intersection, and poor driver behaviour and speeding are concerns for the local community.
We’ve heard that difficulty making right turns at the Ryans Road and Wallowa Road/Allendale Road intersection is a concern for the local community.
The Victorian Government is upgrading two intersections on Ryans Road in Eltham North.
Safer speed
As part of this project, we’ve also introduced a 60km/h speed limit on Wattletree Road and Ryans Road between Laurel Hill Drive and Kim Street to provide a safer, more consistent speed limit appropriate for the road’s use and design.
