Update - September 2023

We have completed upgrade works on the Elgar Road and Riversdale Road intersection in Burwood.

About the project

The Victorian Government is improving bus connection in Melbourne’s inner east to better connect the community with education, jobs, shops, and train services.

The Elgar Road and Riversdale Road intersection in Burwood needed to be upgraded to allow buses to turn right safely onto Elgar Road as part of planned bus route improvements to provide better connections around Deakin University’s Burwood campus.

The upgrades will also improve road safety by reducing the likelihood of side swipe crashes occurring when a bus and a car turns right at the same time.

This project was part of the $109 million investment through the Victorian Budget 2022-23 to improve bus services across the state.

As part of these upgrades, we:

  • modified the median islands on Elgar Road and Riversdale Road intersection and Park Road and Elgar Road to widen the right turning lane for buses
  • relocated and installed drainage, traffic signals and lighting
  • resurfaced the road and painted new line markings
  • installed tactile ground surface indicators on the pedestrian safety platforms to improve accessibility.
