Update - August 2024

We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.

We are continuing to work with contractors to relocate telecommunications services (NBN and Telstra) in and around the intersection before we can commence construction of the upgraded intersection.

We acknowledge and thank the community for their patience during this process.

Major construction is expected to get underway in October 2024, with the new intersection to be operational by mid-2025.

NBN asset relocation works

Our contractor will be undertaking NBN asset relocation work across the intersection during August.

When to expect us

NBN works will take place from Monday 5 August for approximately four weeks.

Working hours will be:

  • Monday to Fridays (9.30am – 2.45pm)
  • Saturdays (10am – 5pm)

Please note times and dates are subject to favourable weather conditions and the contractor’s program of works.

What to expect

  • Installation of new pipes, pits and manholes along nature strips and small sections of Centre Road and Bignell Road, as well as local streets including Lois Court, Elaine Court, Florence Street, Opal Court, Samuel Court, Edith Court, Mackie Road, Cormick Street, Bristol Street and Warwick Street.
  • Medium to high noise levels at times when workers drill and cut along sections of road.
  • Most work will take place on the footpath/nature strip, however there will be short periods of lane closures to enable this work to take place safely. Traffic controllers will be on-site and signage will be in place to direct drivers through the work zone.
  • Pedestrians will be safely managed around works that impact foot traffic.
  • Bus stops will not be impacted during these works.
  • There may be minor delays during busy traffic periods. Please plan ahead and for the safety of our workers, the community and all road users.

Civil construction

Civil works are expected to begin in October 2024 with the project set to be completed by mid-2025.

Works will occur in stages to minimise impacts on the community.

The majority of work will be conducted Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 2.45pm to minimise disruption to school drop-off and pick-up. There may be occasions when work needs to be undertaken outside these hours. We will inform the community ahead of such occasions.

At various stages throughout the works, there will be traffic management including lane closures, and possibly detours. Bus stop locations may also change temporarily.

We will continue to keep the community informed of upcoming changes to traffic management.

About the project

We’re making things safer at this busy intersection by installing traffic lights, adding dedicated turning lanes on Bignell Road and a new pedestrian crossing on Bignell Road.

The upgraded intersection will help traffic queuing along Bignell Road safely turn left or right on to Centre Road as well as improving safety for pedestrians accessing nearby St Peter’s Primary School and Catholic Church.

A new coloured bicycle box and line marking will also improve safety for cyclists along Bignell Road, creating separation and reminding drivers of the potential presence of cyclists.

The existing pedestrian crossing on Centre Road, opposite the primary school, will not be impacted by the intersection upgrade works.
