Next steps
In response to community and road user feedback, the Department of Transport and Planning is investigating additional treatments to improve safety for all road users on Blackshaws Road and Kororoit Creek Road.
These investigations will take into consideration, amongst other factors, the road environment, residential and commercial developments, existing and planned strategic cycling corridors and traffic conditions in the area.
Both Blackshaws Road and Kororoit Creek Road have seen significant growth in the number of residential developments in the area and additional amenities are planned as part of these developments.
The Department of Transport and Planning is also working alongside Hobsons Bay City Council to investigate potential treatments in the area for council managed amenities.
Blackshaws Road
Treatments to improve sight lines for motorists entering Blackshaws Road from side streets are being developed following community feedback, and council are undertaking some additional pedestrian safety treatments as part of their works at the intersection of Mills Street and Blackshaws Road.
A pedestrian refuge has recently been installed on Blackshaws Road near Elizabeth Street as part of the Newport Village housing development.
A speed limit reduction of 50km/h from 60km/h is being investigated for Blackshaws Road between Millers Road and Melbourne Road.
Kororoit Creek Road
A speed limit of 60km/h is being investigated for Kororoit Creek Road between Maddox Road and McGuire Crescent. This new limit will better suit the road environment as it changes from industrial to residential and provide consistency with the 60km/h speed limit on the eastern stretch of the road.
Additional pedestrian safety treatments are also being considered at the roundabout intersection of Ferguson Street and Melbourne Road.
Project background
To inform future planning in the area, we created a survey to help understand how all road users use and experience:
- Blackshaws Road, between Melbourne Road and Millers Road, and
- Kororoit Creek Road, between Melbourne Road and Maddox Road.
The survey invited participation from all road users and was open from Monday 24 April to Tuesday 23 May 2023.
The results from the survey will help inform future planning as the area continues to grow and change.
