Bass Highway intersection safety improvements
We’ve completed the installation of Wonthaggi’s first traffic lights to increase safety and improve traffic flow, in a joint-funded project by the Australian and Victorian Governments with Bass Coast Shire Council.

Overview
The Bass Highway and Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road intersection has been causing congestion and frustration for drivers.
It has also posed a safety risk to pedestrians crossing the busy highway, with three pedestrians seriously injured over the past 10 years.
Lengthy delays have led to drivers taking risks and pulling out into oncoming traffic, increasing the risk of crashes.
We’ve completed the following safety improvements:
- Traffic lights that allow more right-turns on the Bass Highway
- Traffic islands on all approaches to the intersection
- Left and right turning lanes on all approaches including side roads.
Plans to raise the intersection are being reviewed and we will provide updates as we further investigate the safety benefits of installing a raised intersection.
How traffic lights help
The traffic lights improve traffic flow, particularly in peak periods, and allow motorists to safely enter the intersection without the need to pull out into oncoming traffic.
Extended right-turn lanes have been added along the Bass Highway to allow drivers more opportunities to turn right.
Pedestrian lights are also now in operation to allow people to safely cross the Bass Highway and Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road.
