Projects

Bairnsdale network improvement

Update - August 2024

In 2019, we presented the initial designs to improve safety at key locations to the Bairnsdale community.

Based on the feedback you gave us, and further investigations, we refined the designs. In 2022, we sought feedback on these refined designs.

The following works have been funded for construction:

We are currently developing designs for the following projects:

  • Princes Highway and Bairnsdale-Dargo Road intersection upgrade

Overview

The population of Bairnsdale has grown significantly over the past decade, increasing the number of vehicles on the town’s road network. Road users are experiencing longer delays and access issues, particularly at the Princes Highway.

Since 2017, we have been working with the local community to understand what is and isn’t working in Bairnsdale.

During this time, we’ve asked local businesses, key stakeholders and the community about their experiences travelling in Bairnsdale, their concerns about specific locations within the town and their suggestions to improve safety and traffic flow.

We've combined our technical data and your feedback to identify key intersections as priorities for improvements.

We also identified the need to connect pedestrians and cyclists more safely to the Bairnsdale CBD, sporting facilities and schools.

Long-term planning for improvements to the road network is crucial to Bairnsdale’s future and tourism. That is why we’re planning for multiple projects across Bairnsdale.

Details

Shared Path

We’ve built a shared path along the Princes Highway median between Harnham Drive and Forge Creek Road.

Wy Yung (Bullumwaal Road) and Howitt Avenue intersection upgrade

We’re installing traffic signals at the Wy Yung (Bullumwaal Road) and Howitt Avenue intersection to improve safety and traffic flow.

For more information about the works, visit the project page.

Princes Highway, McEacharn Street intersection upgrade

We’re building a dual lane roundabout at the intersection of Princes Highway and McEacharn Street to improve traffic flow and road safety.

For more information about the works, visit the project webpage.

Princes Highway and Bairnsdale-Dargo Road

The Victorian Government is investing $1.35 million towards improving safety at the intersection of Princes Highway and Bairnsdale – Dargo Road in Bairnsdale.

We’re proposing to install traffic signals at this intersection. The upgrade would improve traffic flow and road safety. The works are in planning. We’ll be in touch we progress the works.

Princes Highway, Mitchell River Bridge to Phillips Lane

We need to further investigate options for the Princes Highway between the Mitchell River Bridge and Phillips Lane to respond to growth in Bairnsdale.

These investigations when undertaken will include extensive community and stakeholder consultation.

The Princes Highway and McEacharn Steet intersection upgrade will be an important part of any future highway capacity and efficiency improvements.
