Swanston Street road closure, between Victoria and Elgin streets

From 9pm, Friday 2 February to 5am, Friday 23 February, Swanston Street, between Victoria and Elgin streets, Carlton will be closed for tram track and powerline maintenance and renewal works.

Yarra Trams in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) is conducting ongoing maintenance and renewal works across the Melbourne tram network to ensure a safe and reliable tram service for future generations.

About these works

The tracks and tram powerlines on Swanston Street, between Victoria and Elgin streets, Carlton have been identified for renewal works. The tracks and powerlines have reached the end of their life cycle. To continue to deliver a safe and reliable tram service to the area, they must be replaced.

Swanston Street, between Victoria and Elgin streets, will have disruptions, including a full road closure in some sections from 9pm, Friday 2 February to 5am, Friday 23 February.

What to expect

24-hour works

• Full kerb to kerb road closures and fencing
• Extremely high levels of noise
• Detours for bike riders, pedestrians and traffic
• Service changes to tram routes 1, 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 (visit: yarratrams.com.au/service-changes)

Getting around 

Swanston Street will be closed between Victoria and Elgin streets.

To support you to move around the area during works, traffic management and signage will direct traffic and pedestrians.

We recommend that road users allow extra travel time for their journey. 

Footpaths will be open around the works area. There may be temporary footpath closures around the works, with local detours in place. Pedestrians should follow signage around the works to cross safely. 

Metro Tunnel Project works – closures to Franklin and Little La Trobe streets

As part of the State Library Station works, there will be road and footpath closures on Franklin and Little La Trobe streets.

Tram
