Spencer Street and Collins Street - tram track maintenance road closure

Early works

Sunday 14 May to Friday 30 June 2023 between 9pm and 5am

Night works will take place from Sunday 14 May to Friday 30 June to identify underground services, install new poles and site sheds and deliver rails.

During this time, there will be nightly lane and parking closures along Spencer Street and Collins Street.

Eastbound traffic lanes along Flinders Street will be closed on one night for service investigations. The date will be confirmed closer to works.

The intersection of Spencer Street and Collins Street will also be closed nightly as required.

Traffic management and signage will direct traffic, please follow signage around works. 

Major works

10pm, Friday 30 June to 5am, Monday 10 July 2023

As part of the high priority maintenance and renewal program, works will be undertaken to replace tram tracks, underground cables and tram powerlines along Spencer Street and Collins Street in Melbourne.

Construction will take place 24 hours a day so that Yarra Trams can complete the works quickly. Noise and dust are unavoidable; however, Yarra Trams will work to minimise this as much as possible and complete the noisiest works between 6am and 10pm. There will be extremely high levels of noise for the first week of works while we dig the tracks, asphalt, and concrete.

Collins Street between Batmans Hill Drive and tram stop 1 in Collins Street will be closed to traffic from 10pm, Friday 30 June to 5am, Monday 10 July. The intersection of Collins Street and Spencer Street will also be closed.

Spencer Street between Little Collins Street and Flinders Street will be closed to traffic from 10pm, Friday 30 June to 5am, Tuesday 4 July. 

One eastbound traffic lane of Flinders Street will be closed from 10pm, Friday 30 June to 5am, Tuesday 4 July.

Footpaths on Collins Street and Spencer Street will remain open throughout the works.

Traffic management and signage will direct traffic, please follow signage around the works.

Getting around

To support you to move around the area during works, detours and traffic management will be in place.

We recommend that road users allow extra travel time for their journey.

Footpaths will remain open throughout the works, however, some temporary detours may be in place. Pedestrians should follow signage around the works to cross safely.

Local business

The businesses located around the works will remain open. Please continue to support local businesses during these essential works.

Public transport

There will be service changes to tram routes 11, 12, 48, 109 and 96.

Access to Southern Cross Station will change. Details will be confirmed closer to the works.

Bus Routes 232, 235 and 237 along Collins Street will also be impacted.
