Reopening of Footscray Road walking and cycling path from 13 February

The Footscray Road walking and cycling path will reopen on Tuesday 13 February from 7am. Safety of path users is a top priority and we’ve swept the path and completed a safety check ahead of reopening.

Queuing trucks are no longer obstructing the path at the Port of Melbourne following the conclusion of industrial action. The recent queueing impacted sightlines for all road users, making the path unsafe for people on bikes. We appreciate your ongoing patience during the recent closure.

At Docklands Drive, a minor path detour will be in place via Little Waterfront Way, St Mangos Lane and Waterfront Way until 4 March due to the construction of a new walking and cycling bridge over Footscray Road which is being built as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Signage and traffic management will be in place to help direct users during this time.

Bike rider improvements in the west

We know that Footscray and the west is one of the city’s cycling hotspots, which is why we are working to build a safer, better-connected network of on and off-road paths and trails across the area.

We’ve made a number of improvements on Dynon Road since September 2023. These include refreshed line markings, coloured surface treatments and new signage to improve visibility for bike riders and motorists.

We’re continuing to roll out a range of projects, upgrades and initiatives to make riding a bike easier and safer right across the city’s west. Under the Pop-up Bike Lanes Program, more than 20 kilometres of new and improved cycling routes have been rolled out across the Footscray and Seddon areas.

These upgrades make it easier and safer for cyclists to travel around their local area, as well as travelling to and from the CBD. The new and improved lanes link Footscray City Primary School, Footscray High School’s Pilgrim campus, Victoria University campuses, shopping areas and public transport options across the area.

These routes also link to existing high-quality off-road bike routes, including the Sunshine Trail, Maribyrnong River Trail, and the Footscray Road connection, helping residents from the community and nearby areas ride to and from Melbourne’s CBD more safely.

The West Gate Tunnel Project also includes the biggest investment in cycling infrastructure the west has seen. 14 kilometres of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths will be built, closing gaps in existing paths and creating safer journeys.
