Safe routes to schools program
Councils, schools and not-for-profit organisations can access funding for school projects focused on road safety and active travel.
The safe routes to school program supports projects that:
- improve road safety around school pick-up and drop-off times
- create safe walking and cycling routes to school
- encourage active travel to school.

Councils, schools and not-for-profit organisations can apply for funding. We encourage these groups to apply together as project partners. The program is open to primary and secondary schools.
Available funding per financial year:
- Up to $6,000 (excluding GST and administration funding) per school.
- Up to $24,000 (excluding GST) for applications to run a program for neighbouring schools.
Project eligibility
You can apply for funding for an entire project, from issues identification through to implementation and evaluation or apply for specific activities within a project, if you can demonstrate project need and benefits.
Activities may include:
- design and analysis (for example, student catchment maps or walking audits to identify priority routes to school)
- delivery (for example, road safety incursions, events, campaigns or supporting materials)
- evaluation (for example, online surveys, intercept surveys, student or parent workshops).
We will not fund:
- council officer wages (however, funding may be used to pay contractors)
- standard traffic management infrastructure, such as parking management signs or road crossings
- bike or scooter racks.
