Requests for information

Learn about the data that VicRoads and the Department of Transport and Planning manage, and how to access it. 


VicRoads collects and holds a range of data relating to:

  • vehicle registration
  • vehicle safety
  • driver licensing

Some of this data is publicly accessible; other data may be provided upon request.

Open data

A range of data managed by VicRoads and the Department of Transport and Planning is publicly available.  

Sources for publicly available data include:

  • annual reports, which include information and statistics about operations, achievements and financial position
  • our open data contributions, particularly at the DataVic website. This site includes statistical on vehicle registrations and vehicle transfer.  

About open data

Open data is information that can be freely accessed and used.  

The Victorian Government introduced an open data policy in 2012. Called the DataVic access policy, it provides direction on the release, licensing and management of Victorian Government data so that it can be used and reused by the community and businesses.

Data requests

You can submit a request for vehicle and driver statistics via DataVic's enquiries form.  

Entities with a specific legislative responsibility for law enforcement or transport may be able to access a wider range of data.  

We can’t grant all data requests. We assess each application against a range of legislative criteria before a deciding whether to release the data.

Costs  

Data requests are subject to a fee. The fee for each request is determined as part the request assessment process.  

How we provide data

Data security, especially when personal data is involved, is our primary concern when transferring data.  

If approved, we will determine specific requirements for data transfer when assessing of your request. You must review these requirements and ensure you can comply with them.  

Freedom of Information requests

If you’re seeking personal data about yourself or access to a specific document held by us, you need to make a freedom of information request.

You have the right to apply for access to information held by ministers, Victorian Government departments, local councils, public hospitals, most semi-government agencies and statutory authorities.

We comply with the Freedom of Information Act and have a dedicated unit that can answer any questions you may have relating to freedom of information requests and the department.

Registration and licensing data requests

Request data in writing using DataVic's enquiries form. Your request will be assessed against a range of privacy and security criteria. 

Please allow some time for the us to assess your request.

Depending on the request, you may need to enter into a formal data sharing agreement before we can provide the data requested.  

This can take the form of:

  • an information protection agreement for requests relating to data intended to be used for research, law enforcement, transport purposes or by a charity
  • a data sharing agreement for any other request.
