Registration of heavy vehicles
Heavy vehicle registration (including registration plates) is administered by Department of Transport and Planning.
Drivers and operators can visit a Department of Transport and Planning Customer Service Centre to:
- book a heavy vehicle inspection, register a heavy vehicle and pay their vehicle registration fees
- get/renew their driver licence or purchase the National Driver Work Diary.
Visit register a vehicle if you want to register a heavy vehicle.
Visit heavy vehicle licence if you want to apply for a licence.
Request a heavy trailer vehicle identification number.
NHVR registration checker app
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has launched the NHVR Registration Checker app, which allows operators to check the registration status of any heavy vehicle registered in Australia (except vehicles registered in the Northern Territory).
You can download the free app by searching for ‘NHVR’ from the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store.
How to check your registration details
The NHVR has also created a new registration services module on the NHVR portal so you can get details of every registered heavy vehicle in your fleet.
This free service allows you to:
- confirm that details recorded by transport authorities match your records
- check that registration changes and transfers have been processed correctly
- forecast renewals and costs
- download or print vehicle records to share with others.
If you don’t have an existing NHVR portal account, you’ll need to register.
Note: You should direct queries about registration details to the relevant state or territory transport authority.
