Employee education
Everyone in the workplace has a responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
Employees should:
- not be affected by alcohol or drug use during working hours, including hangovers and drug comedowns
- be aware of their own ability/inability to work and ensure they comply with their employer’s policies at all times
- inform their supervisor if they believe they may not be fit for work.
Employees need to remember that fitness for work includes your physical, mental and emotional state.
There are two primary reasons why workplaces need to educate employees about alcohol and drugs:
- Putting your policy into practice. Employees that are well informed about the impacts of alcohol and drugs (including info on medication and hangovers) are more likely to be aware of how their use of these substances may impact their work performance and ability to drive.
- Preventing incidents from happening. Providing employees with education that is focused on prevention is the best way to help reduce incidents and promote employee wellbeing.
There are a range of different ways you can educate your employees - see our resources page for more information.
Free online training
A free online training program for employees has been specially developed for the heavy vehicle industry. It takes around 30 minutes to complete.
This training program addresses some common myths about alcohol and drugs while also helping drivers understand how these substances can impact their ability to drive safely.
The training also briefly covers ways drivers can stay awake at the wheel and get to sleep after a stressful day without the use of alcohol and drugs.
The following questions are answered in the training:
- Do you get drunk more easily as you get older?
- Can you still be over .05 if you have 2 drinks in the first hour and 1 every hour after that?
- Does a cold shower, exercising and strong coffee lower your BAC?
- Does alcohol help you sleep?
- Can medication affect your driving?
- Does ice or ecstasy make you a better driver?
- Can exercise and healthy eating give you more energy and help you sleep well?
We recommend that you ask all your employees to complete this training when they are inducted into your business and on an annual basis following this.
In Victoria, the blood alcohol limit for all drivers of heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM is 0.00.
