Operating a performance-based standards vehicle
Learn about the process for getting a performance-based standards heavy vehicle designed and approved.
The national performance-based standards (PBS) scheme encourages new designs that emphasise safety and productivity. PBS may provide exemption to prescriptive limits for height, weight and length.
For example, a 6x4 truck towing a quad-dog trailer that operates under general mass limits (GML) is limited to 50 tonnes. The same vehicle operating under PBS could operate up to 57.5 tonnes.
The scheme is administered by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). View the NHVR process for applying for and approving permits.
PBS permit renewal
If you have access to an approved network, you must renew your PBS permit each year.
