Heavy vehicle access and routes
Super B-double network rules
October 2023
Victoria’s Super B-double network provides preapproved permit access for a range of configurations up to 117 tonnes gross combination mass (GCM).
A Super B-double is a Class 3 vehicle that exceeds higher mass limits. A Super B-double can have:
- Tri-axle groups on both trailers;
- A quad-axle group on the lead trailer and triaxle on the semi-trailer; or
- Quad-axle groups on both trailers.
Operators of vehicles that meet the requirements of the Super B-double network require a permit to travel on these routes. Access is restricted to the Port of Melbourne precinct. Network maps are viewable on the Department of Transport and Planning website.
Operating conditions
Super B-doubles operating on the pre-approved
network must:
- Adhere to all conditions and restrictions specified on the network map;
- Be fitted with a self-steering axle on the last axle of each tri-axle or quad-axle when the combination exceeds 26 metres;
- Be fitted with an anti-lock braking system (ABS) on all axles;
- Be fitted with road-friendly suspension, except on the prime mover’s steer axle;
- Be fitted with a ‘long vehicle’ warning sign at the rear of the vehicle;
- Be fitted with side underrun protection to the European Standard;
- Be enrolled in the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme - Mass Management Module;
- Operate within all manufacturer’s ratings, including the braking capabilities as per Australian Design Rules’ braking requirements at maximum load test; and
- Be able to maintain a minimum speed of 50km/h when travelling to and from Webb Dock as a combination, which may mean the combination operates at masses lower than specified above.
Maximum vehicle dimensions
The maximum height for a Super B-double is 4.3m. The maximum width is 2.5m. The maximum length is 30m.
