Heavy vehicle access and routes

Height clearance on roads

Plan a route that avoids overhead structures your heavy vehicle may not be able to pass.

The Department of Transport and Planning’s height clearance map helps heavy vehicle operators and drivers plan their routes. It shows the clearance between road surfaces and overhead structures on arterial roads.

Clearances are only shown for arterial roads

The map only shows height clearance for arterial roads such as freeways, highways and main roads.

Contact the relevant municipality or road manager for clearance information on local roads. This information may appear on the map in some cases, where the relevant road manager has provided it.

You are responsible for knowing if you can pass safely

Vehicle drivers and operators are responsible for checking there is enough clearance under overhead structures to pass safely.

Don’t drive under an overhead structure if your vehicle height, including its load, is equal or higher than the clearance shown on the map.

How we measure clearances

The map’s height clearances are based on measurements in the field or existing signage at the site.

Works, such as road re-sealing, can reduce clearance under some structures. We put signs on all structures 5.0 metres or lower.

We continually update information in the map. Contact us for information on how to request a review of a clearance height.
