Passenger load surveys

We monitor the average number of passengers on metropolitan train and tram services through annual surveys.

Load standards surveys measure passenger loads against benchmark standards. The findings help to pinpoint when and where passenger loads on Melbourne's train lines and tram routes are at their highest.

This information is used to determine when and where extra capacity may be needed to reduce crowding.

Surveys carried out each May determine whether passenger load standards, specified in the franchise agreement between Transport for Victoria and the operators, are being met.
