Blackburn Road (Route 703)

Improved bus services were introduced on Blackburn Road on 5 August 2002 as part of the first stage of the SmartBus project. Along with the SmartBus service on Springvale Road, Blackburn Road was a pilot route for the project.

The Route 703 service operates from Blackburn Railway Station to Middle Brighton via Forest Hill Shopping Centre, Monash University and the Monash Medical Centre. SmartBus facilities are available between Blackburn and Clayton railway stations.

Passenger numbers have grown significantly on the service since its introduction which has ensured the expansion of the SmartBus initiative to other metropolitan routes.

Along with the Blackburn Road service, patronage on Route 888/889 has increased significantly over the past few years, cementing the success of the SmartBus initiative and ensuring its extension to other routes.

The Victorian Transport Plan has committed to extend Route 888/889 through to Airport West via Doncaster, Eltham, Greensborough and Broadmeadows, with services to commence in 2010. It will be known as Orbital Route 902.
