Proposed improvements to Wellington Road SmartBus (Route 900)

Changes are proposed to improve running times for the Route 900 SmartBus service along the northern side of Wellington Road, from Nantilla to Springvale Road (PDF, 97 KB, 1 pp.).

SmartBus services can experience significant delays along this stretch of road. The Department of Transport and VicRoads are therefore proposing the installation of a dedicated bus lane to improve running times and provide a more reliable service to SmartBus and Route 691, 802, 804 and 862 bus users.

Please note: the consultation period for these proposals is now complete and community feedback is being considered by the Department of Transport and VicRoads.

Why are bus lanes important to SmartBus travel times?

On-road priority works are carried out on the basis of how traffic impacts bus journey times. They are designed to reduce the number of minutes a bus might be delayed over its entire journey.

Dedicated bus lanes and bus lane treatments, such as 'queue-jump' facilities give buses the opportunity to drive past built up traffic or to get ahead of traffic at intersections. This makes the overall journey time of the bus more predictable and more closely matched with advertised timetables.

What other benefits will the changes bring?

One bus can remove over 50 single occupancy cars from the road, making bus travel greener and reducing congestion on our roads. By installing bus lanes that improve reliability, more people will be encouraged to leave the car at home and use the bus instead.

Furthermore, the proposed changes will bring benefits to both bus users and local businesses, as treatments will provide safe and easy access to driveways for visitors and deliveries along this stretch of road. Under Victoria's road rules, drivers are allowed to access bus lanes up to 100 metres before a driveway or service road.
